ODISSI MUSIC PROJECT (2007- )
EXPLORING THE FOURTH
WORLD: ESSAYS AROUND THE MUSIC OF JON HASSELL (2009- )
The
following drafts represent partial results
from my long-term struggle
with/meditation on the music of Jon Hassell (and also with/on the idea
of "music"
itself). As the title indicates these writings try to be less "about"
Jon Hassell and/or his music in the usual sense than "around"
them—Hassell provides a
locus around which my investigations gravitate at various distances of
remove. This partly reflects my paradoxical attraction to and
ambivalence
(or perhaps befuddlement) toward Hassell's music; but it also is
motivated by my particular approach to understanding individual artists
and their works (as I try to lay out in the "Introduction").
- 1. Introduction
- 2. An Archeology of Fourth World: Culture, Technology, and
the Other
- 3. Instrumentalizing the Exotic: A Study of Techniques of
"Cross-Cultural" Music-Making
- 4. From the Jungle to the City: Ecomimesis and Imagining
Emplacement
- 5. The Ex/rotic: Pleasure and Desire in the Fourth World
- 6. The Ethics of Fourth World: Music/Society
- 7. Resources (Bibliography, Discography, etc.)
